WEI create change… by helping widows to feed their families through social entrepreneurship. WEI is the first program focused on helping widows in third world countries to start businesses. Micro-loans and grants will be given to alleviate current debt and to buy capital for start up ventures. WEI partners with institutions in communities where large widow populations exist… it is through these connections we identify women who are interested in creating a new live for themselves and others.

WEI alleviates current debt and breaks the cycle of debt inheritance passed on through generations by making micro-loans and grants available. This program was originally started as an aid program for widows to use social entrepreneurship to support their families.

Our mission is to encourage social entrepreneurship among women by providing grants and microloans in the aftermath of social epidemics. In support of this mission the Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative will:

• Empower individuals and organizations worldwide through the encouragement of social entrepreneurism;

• Create new jobs that are needed, wanted, and encouraged by the surrounding community;

• Alleviate current debt and break the cycle of debt inheritance passed on through generations;

• Use social entrepreneurial activities as a way to minimize social epidemics that arise from debt inheritance such as suicide, fleeing the country, and violent protests.

The scope of this work is endless. Ideally a constant stream of funding for grants and minimal interest on the loans (the same as community Self Help Groups and community banks) will allow this program to be sustainable. Even though the primary mission for this program is to encourage social entrepreneurship among women that by no means implies that this organization will only provide funds to women. Dependent upon funding and people’s interest in social entrepreneurship, the possibilities for adapting this program to other regions, issues, and countries are endless. Ultimately in each place that this program is implemented a representative of the organization will train a native of that country to take over the program in that area. This will not only allow the foundation’s resources to be applied in new areas it will also provide a native in each place the program is implemented with the opportunity to be a micro-lender and social entrepreneur.
